Howard County, Maryland; birth place to the Soccer Association of Columbia (SAC). Centrally located between Baltimore and Washington DC, Howard County has become one of the fastest-growing regions in the state, “increasing its population by 34% over the past decade.” According to the Howard County Department of Planning and Zoning, “[its] population is projected to grow to 327,635 by 2035.” Currently, Howard County’s citizens are the wealthiest in Maryland and among the most affluent in the nation. According to the 2007 American Community Survey, “Howard County’s Median Household Income of $101,672 ranked third in the country.” (Howard County, Maryland Economic Development Authority).
Serving Howard County residents for over 40 years, the Soccer Association of Columbia has established itself as one of the largest, most successful and economically secure soccer clubs in the Country. SAC opens its doors to more than 6000 youth soccer players and 1000 volunteers, annually, who participate in its programs. With a focus on player development, the successes of SAC’s technical staff and coaches can only be shown through the commitment and progression of its players. Over the years, SAC has seen its best players move on to the U.S. National Program to compete in the World Cup and Olympics. Many other SAC players have played professionally, at home or abroad, and over 500 have represented colleges around the United States. At a club level, SAC teams have won 42 state cup titles, 10 U.S. Regional Titles, and 6 National titles. All of this has been made possible through the dedicated efforts of its Board of Directors, technical staff, volunteers, coaches, employees, and the construction of the 54 acre Bob Lucido Fields at Covenant Park soccer facility.
Opened Memorial Day 2004, the Bob Lucido Fields at Covenant Park have been home to the Soccer Association of Columbia for 14+ years. With 9 athletic fields, running daily practices; 8-week fall and spring seasons; 2 summer leagues; 1 winter league; 12+ summer camps and 10+ national tournaments annually, Covenant Park averages more than 550,000 visits a year. The state of the art fields are visually stunning and always busy. Covenant Park is where positive memories, unforgettable experiences, and lifelong friendships are made for SAC’s players and families.
In most recent news, SAC, Under Armour (current sponsor), and Southampton FC of English Premier League agreed to a relationship that has placed them all in the national spotlight. The Soccer Association of Columbia is now one of few youth soccer clubs in the United States that has established a working partnership with a top, foreign professional club. Beyond the [very successful] camps, coaching education courses, and tournament that Southampton FC has sponsored and run for SAC members this winter, both parties are eager to further strengthen their relationship and grow what has already become a mutually beneficial arrangement.
As we continue to move forward and strive for excellence, the Soccer Association of Columbia invites you to grow with it and support its future endeavors. It is our hope that you will consider contributing to this wonderful SAC community and become a part of its remarkable history. We are confident that you will gain more “kick” for your buck by increasing corporate exposure and support from the largest private sports organization in the County.
